GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia’s third-ranked Michael Shabaz has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week after leading the second-ranked Cavaliers to three wins last week, including two on the road against top-30 opponents.
Shabaz won all of his matches playing No. 1 or No. 2 singles in straight sets as Virginia won at home vs. No. 75 William & Mary and went on the road for victories over No. 15 Illinois and No. 30 Notre Dame. Shabaz’s singles wins included a 6-4, 6-3 victory over No. 43 Dennis Nevolo of Illinois and a 6-4, 6-2 win over Notre Dame’s 93rd-ranked Stephen Havens.
The Fairfax, Va., native also teamed with Sanam Singh for two doubles wins, one over No. 26 Keziel Juneau and Sebastien Vidal of William & Mary, and one over Tyler Davis and Casey Watt of Notre Dame that clinched the double point of that match.
