NC State's Jay Weinacker named ACC Men's Tennis Players of Week
Jan. 20, 2009 GREENSBORO, N.C. - NC State's Jay Weinacker and Florida State's Noemi Scharle have been named Atlantic Coast Conference Tennis Players of the Week following their spring season-opening performances last weekend. Weinacker, a senior from Birmingham, Ala., received the men's player of the week honor after leading the 49th-ranked Wolfpack to wins over UNC Wilmington and 38th-ranked Penn State. The 55th-ranked Weinacker posted a 6-1, 6-4 win over UNC Wilmington's Gustavo Bertei at No. 1 singles and a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Penn State's Adam Slagter. He teamed with doubles partner Jaime Pulgar to win by scores of 8-1 and 8-3 in the doubles matches. Scharle, a freshman from Colmar-berg, Luxembourg, received the women's player of the week nod after leading the Seminoles to a solid showing in the Wildcat Invitational, hosted by top-ranked Northwestern. Playing her first match against a ranked opponent - No. 28 Georgia Rose of Northwestern - Scharle posted a 6-1, 6-3 win. She also teamed with Federica Suess for an 8-6 win over DePaul's Dunja Antunovic and Kirsten Gambrell, the nation's 36th-ranked doubles team.
Scharle posted an overall record of 3-0 in singles competition in addition to the key doubles win.
