Men's Tennis Closes Out Fighting Illini Invitational
Sept. 17, 2007
Olympia Fields, Ill. - Four Hurricanes picked up singles wins and a pair of doubles wins as the University of Miami men's tennis team closed out competition at the Olympia Fields Country Club/Fighting Illini Invitational on Sunday evening. The three-day event was a round robin tournament for both singles and doubles action, providing all four teams - Miami, Alabama, Notre Dame and host Illinois - a chance to face a variety of competition. It also marked the only Division I clay court tournament of the year. In all, seven players in the field were ranked in the top 100 in the Fila ITA preseason tennis poll - including Miami's 19th ranked junior Daniel Vallverdu (Valencia, Venezuela), while Illinois (5), Notre Dame (6) and Alabama (14) finished the 2007 season ranked in the top 15 in the final ITA polls. Miami finished No. 38. Freshman Carl Sundberg (Oslo, Norway) and junior transfer David Rosenfeld (Coral Gables, Fla./Gulliver Prep/Virginia Tech) both used straight sets to knock off ranked opponents in singles competition for the first time as Hurricanes. Rosenfeld defeated Alabama's No. 42 Billy Mertz, 6-3, 7-5, while Sundberg was victorious over No. 97 Mathieu Thibaudeau of the Crimson Tide, in a convincing 6-0, 6-4 fashion. Sophomores Barnabas Carrega (Basiglio, Italy) and Hector Nieto (Key Biscayne, Fla./Coral Gables) both picked up their second singles wins of the tournament versus Alabama. Carrega used three sets to come from behind and down Dan Buikema, 4-6, 6-3, 10-4, while Nieto needed only straight sets to cruise past Andrew Felsenthal, 6-0, 6-2.
The Miami duo of Rosenfeld and senior Vivek Subramanian (East Brunswick, N.J.) picked up a dominating win over Alabama's fifth-ranked pair of Thibaudeau and Buikema, 8-5, while Sundberg and Nieto knocked off Mertz and Javier Bes, 8-6. The Miami men's tennis team returns to competition on Saturday, Sept. 22, at the Southern Collegiates in Athens, Ga. |
