ATHENS, Ga. - Three members of the Virginia men's tennis team returned to action at the Dan Magill Tennis Center on Wednesday as play began in the NCAA Singles Championship. Less than 17 hours after falling in the team final, Mitchell Frank, Alex Domijan and Jarmere Jenkins were back on the courts to open play in the 64-player tournament.
Frank, the tournament's No. 2 seed, downed No. 22 Anthony Rossi of Kentucky 6-4, 6-4. Domijan, ranked No. 39 nationally, defeated No. 6 seed Evan King of Michigan 6-3, 6-2. Domijan went up an early break in his match and led the first set 4-1. King broke back to get on serve at 4-3, but Domijan responded by winning the next two games to take the opening set.
ATHENS, Ga. - All-American Kevin King earned his first NCAA Championship singles victory Wednesday in a 7-6, 6-4 triumph over KU Singh of Georgia. The Georgia Tech senior advanced to face 10th-ranked Chase Buchanan of Ohio State in the second round Thursday.
Tech teammate Juan Spir wasn't as fortunate in his first-round match, dropping a 6-3, 6-0 decision to Singh's Georgia teammate, 11th-ranked Wil Spencer.
King, ranked 24th in the nation and 28-9 this year in singles, earned the 62nd victory of his career, and Singh, ranked 19th, was the fourth different Bulldog foe King has beaten this year.
ATHENS, Ga. - North Carolina junior Jose Hernandez was on and off the court quickly Wednesday morning, earning his way to a victory over Tulsa's Ashley Watling in the first round of the 2012 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Singles Championship.
The junior from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic drew one of the earliest start times of the day at 10 a.m. and worked it to his advantage, giving him plenty of time to rest for his Thursday singles and doubles tilts.
Hernandez (ranked #26) defeated Watling (ranked #77), the Golden Hurricane's top player, by a 6-3 count in the first set and then survived a monster tiebreaker in the second set to prevail. Hernandez won the set 7-6 after winning the tiebreaker 12-10.
ATHENS, Ga. - NC State senior Jaime Pulgar lost in his opening-round match at the NCAA Men's Tennis Championships to No. 7 Dennis Nevolo of Illinois on Wednesday, 6-1, 6-3.
The straight-set defeat at Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Center ends the collegiate career of the fiery lefthander from Madrid, Spain, who is one of the most successful players in Wolfpack history.
"His opponent was very good," said Wolfpack head coach Jon Choboy. "And even though Jaime is a veteran, this was his first time in the NCAAs and he might've been a little nervous."
ATHENS, Ga. - Virginia Tech senior Luka Somen had a strong opening day at the 2012 NCAA Men's Tennis Singles Championships, defeating Florida's Tripper Carleton in straight sets on Wednesday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.
Somen, ranked 47th in the ITA, defeated 48th-ranked Carleton, 6-2, 6-0 in the opening round match. Tech's No. 1 singles player advances to face 11th-ranked Wil Spencer of Georgia in the round of 32.
