Singh Upsets #1 Seed as UVa Advances in Singles and Doubles
The Virginia men’s tennis team had its run in the 2009 NCAA Individual Championships continue in the quarterfinals Saturday at the Mitchell Tennis Center. Sanam Singh (Chandigrh, India) upset the nation’s No. 1 player Arnau Brugues of Tulsa in straight sets to advance to the singles semifinals, while Dominic Inglot (London, England) and Michael Shabaz (Fairfax, Va.) defeated No. 5-8 seed Omar Altmann and Bassam Beidas of Pepperdine in straight sets to reach the doubles semifinals.

Singh took down the No. 1 seed 6-2, 6-4, ending Brugues’ 28-match winning streak. He has won all four of his matches in the tournament in straight sets, the only player to reach the semifinals without dropping a set.

Singh jumped out to an early lead, breaking Brugues at love in the third game to take a 2-1 lead. He later broke Brugues at love again in the seventh game to take a 5-2 lead before serving out the first set.

Forman and Parr Fall in NCAA Doubles Quarterfinals
The Wake Forest doubles team of senior Cory Parr and junior Steven Forman saw their 2009 season come to an end on Saturday, as the All-American duo fell in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Doubles Tournament at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center on the campus of Texas A&M.

The second-seeded team of Davey Sandgren and John-Patrick Smith of Tennessee took down the Demon Deacons in three sets 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-3.

Forman and Parr had to rally in the second set to post the win and force a third set. With Tennessee serving for the match, Wake Forest broke the serve to tie the set at 5-5. The two teams held server over the next two games to force a tiebreaker.
