Duke Men's Tennis Loses To Georgia, 4-3

ATHENS, GA. -- Georgia's Travis Parrott defeated Duke's Joel Spicher 6-7, 7-6, 6-2 at number five singles to lift third-seeded Georgia to a 4-3 win over sixth-seeded Duke in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Men's Tennis Tournament held on Monday in Athens, Ga. Georgia improves to 26-1 on the season while Duke ends the season at 24-4. The Bulldogs have now won 23 straight matches while the Blue Devils had their winning streak of 16 matches haulted. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 3-0 advantage after taking the doubles point and earning singles wins at the numbers one and six slots. At number one, fifth-ranked Matias Boeker downed ninth-ranked Phillip King, 6-1, 6-3, while Brandon Wagner upended Alex Bose, 6-1, 6-2 at number six. Duke rallied as three seniors, Marko Cerenko, Andres Pedroso and Ramsey Smith, picked up singles wins. Smith, ranked 20th, came from a one-set deficit to defeat eighth-ranked Bo Hodge, 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 at number two. At number three, 27th-ranked Cerenko downed 28th-ranked Lesley Joseph in three sets, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, while at number four, 49th-ranked Pedroso posted a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 win over 47th-ranked Chad Carlson. After Spicher and Parrott traded sets in tiebreaker fashion, Parrott broke Spicher's serve in the sixth game to take a 4-2 lead in the final set. The loss for Spicher snapped his 15-match winning streak and ended his streak of consecutive sets won at 26. Georgia advances to the Final Four to meet SMU on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.
