May 11, 2002

KNOXVILLE, TN - The Wake Forest men's tennis team lost 4-0 Saturday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at #5 at Tennessee. The 26th-ranked Demon Deacons finish the season with a 17-6 record.

"I thought we played really well," said Wake Forest head coach Jeff Zinn. "All of the guys played hard, it just happened to be one of those matches that had some tiebreaks that could have gone either way. Tennessee won them and showed why they are seeded No. 2 for the NCAA Tournament."

The Volunteers captured the doubles point with an 8-3 win at the No. 2 doubles match and an 8-6 victory at the No. 3 doubles match.

Tennessee finished off the Demon Deacons in singles play with wins at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3. David Loewenthal lost 6-1, 6-3 in the No. 1 singles match to #7 Peter Handoyo. David Bere fell 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 2 singles match to #18 Mario Toledo and Derrick Spice succumbed to #77 Adam Carey 7-6 (5), 6-2.

Loewenthal, the 41st-ranked singles player in the nation, awaits next week's pairings for the NCAA Singles Championship May 22-26 in College Station, TX. Wake Forest ends one of the most successful seasons in the program's history with a 17-6 overall record. Five of the six starters will return next season, including four All-ACC selections and this year's ACC Rookie of the Year, Derrick Spice.
