ACC Men's Tennis Championship Concludes First Day of Competition

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. - Opening round of the 2008 ACC Men's Tennis Championship at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla., saw the season continue for Duke, Miami, NC State and Virginia. The four teams will now move into Friday's quarterfinal round.
NC State will take on top-seeded Virginia at 9 a.m., while a pair of matches at noon will showcase Virginia Tech against Wake Forest and Miami versus North Carolina. The other quarterfinal match will feature Duke squaring off with Florida State at 3 p.m.
A pair of thrilling 4-3 victories was the highlight in the first day of competition. All-ACC selection James McGee from NC State defeated ACC Freshman of the Year Guillermo Gomez of Georgia Tech 6-7 (5), 7-5, 6-4 to give the Wolfpack the overall 4-3 victory. The Yellow Jackets started off strong, winning the doubles point, but were unable to hold off NC State in singles.
No. 5 seed Virginia Tech posted a big win Thursday. After Clemson won the doubles point, the battle heated up in singles play. Yoann Re's 6-3, 7-5 win over Clemson's Rok Bizjak at No. 3 tied the match, and Sebastian Jacques sealed the deal for the Hokies as he defeated Clemson's Kevin Fleck 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 at the No. 5 position.
Other first-round matches on the day featured No. 6 seed Duke recording a 4-0 win over 11th-seeded Boston College and No. 7 seed Miami defeating 10th-seed Maryland, 4-1. The Terrapins jumped out to a 1-0 lead, winning the doubles point, but Miami would battle back in singles by taking four of the spots. Vivek Subramanian clinched the overall match for the Hurricanes with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Maryland's David Kwon at No. 2.
