April 12, 2008 Wake Rallies to Top Hokies 4-3 BLACKSBURG, Va. - The No. 30 Wake Forest men's tennis team fought its way back from a doubles point deficit to post four singles wins, taking a 4-3 decision over No. 29 Virginia Tech on Friday afternoon. With the match score tied at 3-3, sophomore Jason Morgenstern clinched the victory at No. 4 with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 win over Pedro Graber. The victory was Morgenstern's 20th since the fall and eighth in ACC dual match play. The Demon Deacons are now 16-8 and 7-3 in the ACC while Virginia Tech stands at 12-7, 5-5. Steve Forman was the first to earn a singles win on Friday, upending 40th-ranked Albert Larregola in straight sets (6-2, 6-3). Senior Mariusz Adamski followed with a quick 6-3, 6-1 vicotyr over Yoann Re at No. 3, to give the Deacons a 2-1 advantage.
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Top-ranked Virginia clinched its fifth consecutive ACC regular season title with a 5-2 win over NC State Friday afternoon in front of 584 fans at the Snyder Tennis Center. The Cavaliers improve to 24-0 overall and 10-0 in the ACC with the victory, while NC State falls to 11-12, 4-6 in the conference. "Give NC State a lot of credit," said head coach Brian Boland. "They played a great match. The last week or so, our practices have been inconsistent because guys have been out with the flu and some nagging injuries. That showed today. I thought we handled it well, but it was tough to keep our energy up." The Cavaliers overcame a slow start in doubles to sweep the three contests. Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) and Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) rallied from down an early break to top James McGee and Christian Welte 8-6 at No. 1 doubles. At the No. 2 position, Dominic Inglot (London, England) and Michael Shabaz (Fairfax, Va.) also came back from down a break to top Nick Cavaday and David Chermak 9-7. Lee Singer (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) and Ted Angelinos (Athens, Greece) completed the sweep with a 9-8 win over Jay Weinacker and Derek Stephens.
DURHAM, N.C. - The No. 42 Duke men's tennis team won eight of the nine matches on Friday for a 6-1 victory over No. 61 Clemson at Ambler Tennis Stadium. The Blue Devils improved to 8-12 for the season and evened up their ACC record at 5-5. With the loss the Tigers fall to 15-18 overall and 1-9 in league play. Duke got off to a good start with wins in all three doubles contests. No. 50 David Goulet and Christopher Price clinched the doubles point with an 8-5 win over Ike Belk and Rok Bizjak at the top doubles position. Reid Carleton and Kiril Dimitrov were the first to finish with an 8-6 victory against Carlos Alvarez and Kevin Fleck in the No. 2 slot. Dylan Arnould and Alex Stone sealed the sweep with an 8-3 win against Gera Boryachinskiy and Kevin Galloway in the No. 3 match.
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 12 ranked Florida State men's tennis team defeated No. 58 Maryland 5-2 on Friday afternoon to clinch no worse than third-place in the ACC. "I thought Maryland played a great match today," FSU head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. "It was good for us to come back after facing some early adversity." For one of the few times this season the Seminoles lost the doubles point to the Terrapins. All three matches went down to the wire beginning with the contest on court two where FSU's senior Sam Chang and junior Maciek Sykut defeated Michael Coleman and Nickolai Nielsen of Maryland 8-6. The win gave Chang his 150th career victory as a Seminole.
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The No. 11-ranked North Carolina men's tennis team dropped the opening set in four singles matches Friday afternoon but rallied to win four of five three-setters in singles play in a 6-1 victory over the No. 50 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The win improved the No. 11 Tar Heels to 18-4 overall on the season and to 8-1 in the ACC. Carolina has now won 14 of its last 15 matches. Georgia Tech fell to 3-7 in the ACC and 13-10 overall this season. Carolina moved to a quick 1-0 lead as the Tar Heels won at both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles by 8-3 scores. The Tar Heels got wins from No. 10-ranked Taylor Fogleman and Chris Kearney at No. 1 and from No. 42-ranked Clay Donato and Stefan Hardy at No. 2. Clay Donato was the first player off the court in singles play as he defeated Ryan Smith 6-3, 6-3 and in the process improved to 12-3 in dual matches this spring. The overall match then tightened up considerably as Tech claimed the first set in four of the other five singles matches on the court. After the conclusion of the Donato match, it took 90 minutes before Chris Kearney increased the Tar Heel lead to 3-0 as the No. 83-ranked Kearney defeated No. 78-ranked David North 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. The loss was only the second of the spring for North who is now 11-2.
