Top-Ranked Cavaliers Blank NC State Virginia took the 1-0 lead by taking the doubles point from the Wolfpack (13-10, 1-7 ACC). All three Cavalier teams were down an early break, but Virginia rallied for wins at No. 1 and No. 2. Drew Courtney (Clifton, Va.) and Michael Shabaz (Fairfax, Va.) topped Dominic Hodgson and Freddy Prandecki 9-7 at the top position, while Sanam Singh (Chandigarh, India) and Houston Barrick (Brentwood, Tenn.) downed Jaime Pulgar and Dave Thomson 8-6 at No. 2. In singles, the Cavaliers swept all six matches, five in straight sets. Highlighting the singles wins were a pair of milestone wins. Singh and Barrick each recorded their 100th career singles win, becoming the sixth and seventh players in school history to accomplish the feat. They join Somdev Devvarman (158 wins), Treat Huey (129), Brian Vahaly (125), Rylan Rizza (123) and Darrin Cohen (100) as members of the 100 singles win club. Barrick, who recorded his 110th career doubles win earlier in day, became the fourth Cavalier with at least 100 wins in both singles and doubles (Devvarman, Huey, and Cohen). Barrick’s win was a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Akash Gujarati at No. 5, while Singh topped Hodgson 6-1, 7-6(4) at No. 2.
No. 19 Tar Heels Notch Another ACC Win over Tigers The 19th-ranked North Carolina men's tennis team scored another ACC victory Friday afternoon, beating #40 Clemson 5-2. With the win, the Heels move to 14-4 overall and move into a tie for fourth place in the ACC with a 5-2 record. The Tigers drop to 17-6 and 3-5 in the ACC. In doubles play, the Heels' No. 2 and No. 3 pairings cruised to easy wins to clinch the point. The 17th-ranked pair of Clay Donato and Stefan Hardy finished the Tigers off at No. 1 with an 8-5 victory. Hokies down Demon Deacons, 5-2 After Tech lost the first singles match, as 38th-ranked Yoann Re (Sr., Verdun, Quebec, Canada) fell to 56th-ranked Steve Forman for Wake at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-4, the Hokies reeled off three victories in a row. Corrado Degl’ Incerti Tocci (So., Reggio Emilia, Italy) downed Wake’s 101st-ranked Iain Atkinson 6-1, 6-4, at No. 3 singles, and Luka Somen (Karlovac, Croatia), ranked 61st in the nation, upset the Demon Deacons’ Tripper Carleton, ranked 42nd in the country, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 2 singles. Will Beck (Jr., Potomac, Md.) sealed the match for the Hokies with a 7-6, 6-4 victory over Wake’s Danny Kreyman, in the No. 5 singles match. Sebastien Jacques (Magog, Quebec, Canada) defeated Zach Leslie, 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 6 singles match to record Tech's final point while Patrick Daciek (So., Severna Park, Md.) fell to Wake’s Jon Wolff in a super-breaker, 5-7, 7-6, 1-0 (10-6) at No. 4 singles. Hurricanes Win Second-Straight Men's Tennis Match Christian Blöcker and David Simon got Miami off to a fast start with the 8-4 win at No. 1 in doubles play to improve to a team-best 15-9. All-American Carl Sundberg and Ignacio Taboada - pairing for the first time in conference competition this season - clinched the doubles point with the 8-4 victory at No. 3. Miami's 57th-ranked tandem of Hector Nieto and Keith Crowley bounced back from an early deficit to complete the doubles sweep, defeating their Terrapin opponents, 8-6, to move to 11-5 this season. Miami carried that momentum into singles play, winning five consecutive singles matches - including four in straight sets - to earn the 6-1 win over Maryland (13-9, 1-7). |
