March 31, 2008 Virginia Cruises to 6-1 Win Over No. 10 Florida State CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The top-ranked Virginia men's tennis team needed barely two-and-a-half hours to post its seventh top 10 win of the season, downing No. 10 Florida State 6-1 Sunday afternoon at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar's Head Sports Club. The Cavaliers (21-0, 7-0 ACC) recorded their 24th consecutive win over an ACC opponent, tying the school record set from 2004-2006. "I think with each match we have just continued to play a little bit better," said head coach Brian Boland. "We had a great week of practice and that hard work showed in a pair of wins against two quality conference teams." The Cavaliers opened the match by sweeping the doubles matches. Michael Shabaz (Fairfax, Va.) and Dominic Inglot (London, England) improved to 2-0 since being paired this week, topping Sam Chang and Maciek Sykut 8-1 at the No. 2 position. Top-ranked Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) and Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) clinched the opening point with an 8-5 victory over No. 27 Jean-Yves Aubone and Clint Bowles at the top position.
BLACKSBURG, Va. - Virginia Tech's Albert Larregola (Sr., Lleida, Spain) earned his biggest win of the season with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over the No. 4 nationally-ranked player in the country to help the Hokies defeat Miami, 6-1, on Sunday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. Ranked No. 28 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association national poll, Tech improves to 11-5 on the year and 4-3 in the ACC, while the No. 26 Hurricanes drop to 9-6 and 2-4 in conference play. Miami won two of the three doubles matches for the first point of the day, but Tech swept the ACC foe in singles action for the victory, which comes two days after the Hokies' tough 4-3 loss to No. 10 Florida State. "I'm really excited about the win," head coach Jim Thompson said. "The guys played well, and Miami is a good team. We knew they were good, and I thought we would be up for the match because we had really been looking forward to it for a long time. I'm really happy with the way we played today.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The No. 30 Wake Forest men's tennis team wrapped up the home portion of the 2008 schedule with two Atlantic Coast Conference wins, including a 7-0 sweep of Clemson on Friday and a 5-2 victory over Georgia Tech on Sunday. The Demon Deacons are now 15-6 overall and 6-1 in league play heading into the final two weeks of regular season matches. The Yellow Jackets are 11-9, 1-6 in 2008. In his final regular season match at the WFU Indoor Tennis Center, senior Mariusz Adamski posted wins in doubles and singles, including the clinching doubles match with teammate Jason Morgenstern at No. 3. Adamski also defeated Georgia Tech competitor Scott Blackmon 6-3, 7-5, marking the senior's 73rd career singles victory.
RALEIGH, N.C. - No. 53 NC State men's tennis team improved to 12-8 overall and 4-2 in the ACC with a win over league rival No. 54 Clemson (13-14, 1-6 {ACC}), 6-1, on Sunday at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center. Nick Cavaday won in singles and doubles in his final home match with the Red and White, as the team honored him and two other seniors, David Rozek and Daniel Schinke. "These seniors have meant a lot to this program," head coach Jon Choboy said. "Daniel has been with us for three semesters, but Nick and David came on board four years ago when we were building this program. The last two classes have brought this program to a level that matches our past accomlishments and has accomplished things that NC State has never done before in tennis. They are special in that regard that they helped build the program and to take it to where we are now. It says a lot about these kids and their unselfishness, character and integrity."
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 40 Duke men's tennis team concluded a 10-match road stretch with a 7-0 victory at No. 63 Maryland on Sunday in College Park, Md. The match ended a stretch where the Blue Devils played a total of 10 matches in six different states over a span of 26 days. The total distance traveled during the road streak tallied 8,929 miles. Duke's last home match was March 2. Sunday's win was the second straight 7-0 win for the Blue Devils on the weekend as they also swept Boston College on Friday. With the win Duke improved to 4-2 in ACC play and 7-9 overall for the year. The Terps fall to 1-6 in the league and 9-7 overall. Maryland native Jared Pinsky, a freshman from Potomac, Md., wrapped up the sweep for the Blue Devils. His match against Michael Coleman at the No. 6 spot was the last match to finish and he came away with a 7-6 (4), 6-3 win to improve to 3-2 in league matches and 8-9 overall.
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The ninth-ranked UNC Tar Heel men's tennis team won a 7-0 decision over the unranked Boston College Eagles on Sunday morning, winning all three doubles matches and sweeping every set in singles play en route to their 10th straight victory and fourth straight ACC win. The win lifts UNC to 14-3 overall and 4-0 in the ACC. The Tar Heels will host three ACC matches in the coming week against NC State Wednesday, Virginia Friday and Virginia Tech Sunday.
