No. 1 Virginia Tops Florida State and Delaware
The top-ranked Virginia men’s tennis team extended its home winning streak to 69 consecutive matches as it swept a doubleheader Sunday at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. The Cavaliers (25-1, 5-0 ACC) topped ACC rival Florida State 5-2 in the first match before downing Delaware 10-1 in the nightcap.

Virginia opened the day by defeating the Seminoles (11-5, 4-2 ACC). The Cavaliers opened the match by winning the doubles point. Drew Courtney (Clifton, Va.) and Michael Shabaz (Fairfax, Va.) cruised to an 8-2 win over Connor Smith and Vahid Mirzadeh at No. 1. Lee Singer (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) and Jarmere Jenkins (College Park, Ga.) remained unbeaten as a pair with their 8-6 win over Andres Bucaro and Anderson Reed at the No. 3 position.

In singles, the Cavaliers quickly extended their lead to 3-0 with wins at No. 5 and No. 6, as Barrick topped Reed 6-2, 6-2 and Singer downed Jordan Kelly-Houston 6-2, 6-4. After Mirzadeh upset third-ranked Sanam Singh (Chandigarh, India) at No. 2 to cut the lead to 3-1, Shabaz clinched the win with his 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 win over Jean-Yves Aubone at No. 1. Jenkins later added a 7-6, 6-2 win over Bucaro at No. 4.

Tech completes weekend sweep with 5-2 win over Miami
The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team followed up a 5-2 win on Friday over No. 22 Florida State with a solid 5-2 victory aginst No. 49 Miami Sunday afternoon at the Burleson-Burleson Tennis Center. The Hokies improved 10-3 overall and 4-1 in the ACC, while the Hurricanes fell to 6-8 and 0-5 in the conference.


 

 

Tech, ranked No. 20 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association national poll, won two of the three doubles contests to take the first point of the day, then won four of the six singles matches for the victory.

After winning the doubles point, the Hokies won the first three completed singles matches to clinch the victory. Will Beck (Jr., Potomac, Md.) took the No. 5 match, 6-3, 6-0, over Waylon Chin and Corrado Degl’ Incerti Tocci (So., Reggio Emilia, Italy) won his No. 3 match, 6-4, 6-3, against Keith Crowley. Tech clinched the victory at No. 1 as Yoann Re (Sr., Verdun, Quebec, Canada), ranked No. 51 nationally, defeated Christian Blocker, 6-4, 6-1.

Duke Takes 5-2 Victory Over Maryland
Duke picked up its second win this season over an ACC opponent, defeating Maryland, 5-2, in College Park this afternoon. The Blue Devils concluded their weekend road trip, 3-0.

The Blue Devils won the first match point by sweeping all three doubles matches. At No. 1 doubles, Dylan Arnould and David Holland took down Tommy Laine and Jesse Kiuru of Maryland, 8-6.

On court two, the 44th-ranked pair of Alain Michel and Torsten Wietoska won a convincing 8-0 match over Ian Mansfield and Sergio Wyss. Duke finished doubles play with Reid Carleton and Jared Pinsky earning an 8-2 win over John Collins and Ryan Lissner at No. 3 doubles.

No. 26 Demon Deacons Sweep Clemson 7-0
The Wake Forest men's tennis team bounced back from a tough Georgia Tech 4-3 loss on Saturday to sweep Clemson 7-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Indoor Tennis Center and Leighton Stadium.

Wake Forest improves to 8-5 and 2-1 in the ACC. Clemson stalls at 15-4, 2-2.

Wake Forest took the doubles point 3-0, but Clemson roared back on courts 1 and 3 after falling behind early to give the Demon Deacons a run for the money. Steven Forman and Zach Leslie were up 7-2 when Clemson won three back-to-back games. On court 3 Jon Wolff and Jason Morgenstern were up 7-1 when Clemson broke through and fired back with four wins before Morgenstern and Wolff finished the match.

Georgia Tech Downs NC State, 6-1
Kevin King came from behind to win the clinching match, and 29th-ranked Georgia Tech captured five of the sixth singles matches, four of them in three sets, to get past No. 46 NC State Sunday afternoon.

The Yellow Jackets (12-3, 3-1 ACC), who completed a weekend sweep of road matches in the Atlantic Coast Conference, won their fourth straight match and third straight in the ACC. The Wolfpack fell to 13-6 overall, 1-3 in the ACC.

King not only won the clinching match, but teamed up with freshman Juan Spir to take an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles as Tech took a 1-0 lead early by winning the doubles point. Then Tech went on to win the match despite a loss by its All-American, Guillermo Gomez, at No. 1 singles.
