No. 1 Virginia Blanks Miami 7-0
The top-ranked Virginia men's tennis team ran its win streak to 20 matches with a 7-0 victory over No. 49 Miami on Friday at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar's Head Sports Club. The Cavaliers (23-1, 4-0 ACC) also extended their wins streaks to 67 consecutive home wins and 51 consecutive wins against ACC competition.

Virginia opened the match by sweeping all three doubles matches from the Hurricanes (6-7, 0-4 ACC). Michael Shabaz (Fairfax, Va.) and Drew Courtney (Clifton, Va.) won at No. 1, the duo of Sanam Singh (Chandigarh, India) and Houston Barrick (Brentwood, Tenn.) won at No. 2, and Jarmere Jenkins (College Park, Ga.) and Lee Singer (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) won at No. 3.

In singles, the Cavaliers swept all six contests and are yet to drop a singles match in ACC play this season. Barrick topped Waylon Chin 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5 to make the score 2-0. Singer added a 6-3, 6-2 win over Ignacio Taboada at No. 6. Courtney clinched the win with his 7-6, 6-1 win at No. 4 over David Simon. Singh posted a straight set win over Carl Sundberg at No. 2 before Jenkins and Shabaz recorded three-set wins at No. 3 and No. 1 respectively to complete the sweep.

#18 Tar Heels Defeat Terrapins 4-3 For 7th Straight Victory
The Tar Heel men's tennis team is becoming accustomed to performing under pressure, winning another tightly-contested match Friday afternoon, this time against ACC foe Maryland. The Heels are now on a seven-game win streak.


 

 

With the 4-3 victory, the #18-ranked Heels are 12-2 (2-0) on the season. The Terrapins move to 13-5 (1-3) and have dropped three consecutive ACC match-ups.

The strong doubles play that has become characteristic of this year's team was again on display Friday. The No. 2 pairing of Brennan Boyajian and Cameron Ahari defeated their opponents 8-3. Jose Hernandez and Andrew Crone then clinched the point at No. 3 with a decisive 8-2 victory. At No. 1, the #54 doubles pair of Clay Donato and Stefan Hardy finished the Terrapins off, winning 8-2.

No. 20 Hokies defeat No. 22 Florida State, 5-2
The Virginia Tech men's tennis team won a hard-fought 5-2 decision Friday afternoon over No. 22 Florida State at the Burleson-Burleson Tennis Center. The Hokies improved 9-3 overall and 3-1 in the ACC, while the Seminoles fell to 11-4 and 4-1 in the conference.

Tech, ranked No. 20 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association national poll, lost two of the three doubles contests to drop the first point of the day, but bounced back to take five of the six singles matches for the victory.

After winning the doubles point, Florida State took a 2-0 lead as Tech's Corrado Degl' Incerti Tocci (So., Reggio Emilia, Italy) lost, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 3 against 71st-ranked Clint Bowles. Tech got on the board as Yoann Re (Sr., Verdun, Quebec, Canada) won his No. 1 match, 6-3, 4-2 (ret.) over No. 22 Jean-Yves Aubone and evened the match at 2-2 with a 6-3, 6-2, win by Luka Somen (So., Karlovac, Croatia), ranked No. 67, at No. 2 over No. 48 Vahid Mirzadeth.

No. 46 NC State Tops No. 33 Clemson 5-2
The No. 46 NC State men's tennis team recorded its first ACC win of the year by beating No. 33 Clemson 5-2. The Wolfpack moves to 13-5 and 1-2 in the ACC, while the Tigers drop to 15-3 and 1-2 in the ACC.

For most college tennis teams, the doubles point is a good indicator of the match. For NC State it's no different. Fernando Banos and Frideric Prandecki were the first to finish, losing 8-6 to Moritz Dettinger and Zachary Rigsby. The Pack rebounded though as Dominic Hodgson and Rob Lowe defeated Derek DiFazio and Wes Moran 8-6. The doubles point was won when Jaime Pulgar and Dave Thomson beat Carlos Alvarez and Juan Bolona 8-5.

Halfway through singles the match was moved inside because of cold weather and a light rain, but it didn't affect the Wolfpack. D. Thomson took care of Moran 6-3, 6-1 to give the Pack a 2-0 lead. The Tigers earned a point when Kevin Galloway beat Lowe 6-1, 6-4. Hodgson increased the lead to 3-1 with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over DiFazio.
