Deacs Take 4-3 Thriller over Wolfpack

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest men's tennis team downed the NC State Wolfpack 4-3 at Leighton Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

Wake's Carlos Salmon saved four match points, including a spectacular comeback from a 4-5, 0-40 deficit in the third set to clinch the match with a 6-7, 6-4, 7-5 finish. With the win the Deacs improved to 9-3 and 1-0 in conference play. The Pack now stands at 6-5 and 0-1 for 2008.

Next week the Deacs will spend spring break in Texas, facing Texas A&M at 6 p.m. on Monday the TCU Horned Frogs on Friday.


Duke Drops 4-3 Decision to No. 18 VCU

RICHMOND, Va. - The Blue Devils received another tough loss on Wednesday as they lost, 4-3, to No. 18 Virginia Commonwealth at the Thalhimer Tennis Center in Richmond, Va.

Duke got off to a strong start by winning the doubles point for the fourth time in seven matches. Dylan Arnould and Alex Stone earned their first victory over a ranked opponent this season as they defeated No. 36 Martin Schulhauser and Thibaut Charron 8-6 at the No. 2 position. The Blue Devils also won at the No. 3 position as two freshmen Reid Carleton and Jared Pinsky played together for the first time and won 8-5 against Bobo Delemark and Stepan Siska.

The Blue Devils took a 3-0 lead in the match by winning the first two singles contests. Carleton, ranked No. 39 in the ITA singles rankings, played in the top spot for the first time in his career and defeated Schulhauser 3-6, 6-0, 6-4. Carleton leads Duke on the season with a 16-5 overall record and 6-1 mark in dual match play. He has now won five straight singles matches.
