No.1 Georgia defeats Clemson 7-0

ATHENS, GA- The No. 1-ranked University of Georgia men's tennis team defeated Clemson 7-0 at Athens, GA Tuesday at the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Courts. Earlier in the day, Clemson defeated Erskine 7-0 in Athens. In the Georgia contest, the match was clinched by freshman Jamie Hunt as he defeated Paul Konenke at the No. 4 singles position, 7-6, 6-1. Georgia is now 2-0 on the year, while Clemson falls to 9-1 this season. The Tigers are ranked 24th nationally. Georgia got the match started with a doubles sweep, taking a 1-0 lead. The No. 1-ranked team of senior John Isner and junior Luis Flores recorded an 8-2 victory over Clement Reix and Ryan Young at the first position. Next to finish was Hunt and fellow freshman Nate Schnugg as they posted an 8-2 win over Carlos Alvarez and Ike Belk at the third position to clinch the point. Senior Matic Omerzel and junior Travis Helgeson finished off the sweep as they topped Konenke and Jarmaine Jenkins, 8-6. In singles play, Georgia took a 2-0 lead as 2nd-ranked Isner defeated 46th-ranked Reix at the No. 2 singles spot, 6-3, 6-3. The Bulldogs then extended the advantage to 3-0 as 13th-ranked Flores defeatedYoung at the No. 3 singles position, 6-4, 6-2, setting Hunt up for the match-clincher. The Bulldogs took a 5-0 as 22nd-ranked Helgeson battled back after falling in the first set at the No. 1 position, defeating Jenkins 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. Next to finish was 64th-ranked Omerzel as he won over Rok Bizjack at the No. 5 singles spot, 6-0, 6-4. Schnugg capped the UGA win with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at the sixth singles position over Carlos Alvarez.
