Feb. 4, 2007
PHILADELPHIA - The Maryland men's tennis team went on the road Sunday and picked up a win over a nationally-ranked opponent as the Terps edged No. 51 University of Pennsylvania, 4-3, in a non-conference match at Levy Pavilion. Maryland (2-0) won the doubles point and split the singles matches to win its second-straight dual outing following a defeat of Georgetown Friday. Penn (1-2) lost for the second time this weekend after falling to the University of Central Florida Friday. The Quakers were solid at the top of their lineup, but Maryland used its depth to take home the win. Penn won at the No. 1 and 2 singles, but the Terps captured three of the other individual matches. Maryland freshman David Kwon downed Justin Fox of Penn 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 at the No. 3 position and senior Scott Fink defeated Eric Riley 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4. Boris Fetbroyt had the final singles win for the Terps, defeating Andy Magnes 7-5, 6-3 at the No. 6 position. Adam Schwartz of Penn defeated freshman Louis-Xavier Lavallee in straight sets (6-4, 6-3) at No. 5. Jason Pinsky, the 85th-ranked player in the nation, defeated Andrew Orban 6-2, 7-5 at the No. 1 position, while teammate Jonathan Boym downed the Terps' Nickolai Nielsen 6-0, 6-2. The doubles point was hotly contested, but the Terps won two of the three matches. At the No. 1 position, Orban and Fink combined to down Pinsky and Riley 8-4 while Kwon and Fetbroyt defeated Boym and Fox 8-3 at No. 2.
Adam Schwartz and Brandon O'Gara of Penn edged Lavallee and Trey Taylor 8-4 in the other doubles match. Maryland will look to extend its two-match winning streak next weekend when it travels to Annapolis, Md., to face Navy. The Terps and Midshipmen face off at noon Saturday. |
