![]() Six ACC Men's Soccer Teams Contend for 2007 NCAA College Cup
Nov. 19, 2007 GREENSBORO, N.C. - Six ACC men's soccer programs were selected to the 2007 NCAA Tournament Field of 48 as announced by the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Committee on Monday. Four of the six ACC teams receiving a bid earned a top 16 national seed. Since seeding began in 1994, the ACC has tabbed the top seed nine of the possible 14 years. ACC Tournament Champion and regular season champion Boston College was awarded the No. 1 seed and will face the winner of Boston University and Massachusetts on Nov. 28. The Eagles, which are making their sixth overall NCAA Tournament appearance and first since 2002, host the second-round action at 7 p.m. ET. ACC Men's Soccer Coach of the Year and head coach Ed Kelly led the Eagles to a 15-4-1 finish and a mark of 7-1-0 in ACC action this season. Wake Forest, which topped the Soccer America Top 25 poll eight of the 12 weeks this season, collected the No. 2 seed and will host the winner of Campbell and Furman on Nov. 28 at 7 p.m. The Demon Deacons are making their 12th appearance and seventh consecutive. Last season, Wake defeated Hofstra, Towson and Santa Clara, earning the Demon Deacons' first-ever NCAA semifinal appearance, yet fell to eventual NCAA Champion UC Santa Barbara. No. 11 seed Virginia Tech looks to advance past the second-round as the Hokies welcome the winner of UC Davis and California (Berkeley) on Nov. 28 at 7 p.m. Virginia Tech has made a showing at the NCAA Tournament three times under the direction of Oliver Weiss as the Hokies will be making their fourth appearance. Maryland wraps up the ACC representation among the top 16 seeded programs as the No. 13 seeded Terrapins earned their 25 NCAA appearance in school history. The Terps have claimed two national College Cup titles, the latest coming in 2005. Maryland is 10-5-4 on the season and will host the winner of Liberty and Loyola (Md.) on Nov. 28 at 5 p.m. Rounding out the NCAA selections from the ACC are at-large selections Duke and Virginia. Head coach John Rennie, who retires following this season, has led the Blue Devils to NCAA appearances 20 of the last 29 years and will travel to Kentucky to face Louisville in first-round action on Nov. 23 at 7 p.m. The winner of the Blue Devils and Cardinals, who are making their first NCAA Tournament appearance, will advance to face No. 5 seeded Ohio State on Nov. 28 at 7:30 p.m. The Cavs will make their 29th appearance, holding an impressive 46-23-4 record in the NCAA tournament. Virginia will host St. Peter's in first-round action on Nov. 23 at 5 p.m. The 48 teams are vying for the right to compete at the 2007 NCAA Men's College Cup December 14 and 16 in Cary, North Carolina, at SAS Soccer Park. NC State University, the Capital Area Soccer League and the Town of Cary will host the championship.
