Six ACC Men's Soccer Teams Contend for 2008 NCAA College Cup
Nov. 17, 2008 GREENSBORO, N.C. - The ACC led all conferences with six teams selected to the 2008 NCAA Tournament Field of 48 announced by the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Committee on Monday. Four of the six ACC teams receiving a bid earned a top 16 national seed, while the ACC once again earned the top seed; the 10th time since seeding began in 1994. Defending national champion Wake Forest, which topped the Soccer America and National Soccer Coaches Association of America Top 25 poll all 11 weeks of the regular season, collected the No. 1 seed and will host the winner of William & Mary and Winthrop on Nov. 25 at 7 p.m. The Demon Deacons (18-1-1) will make their 13th NCAA appearance and eighth consecutive. Wake finished the 2008 season as the ACC regular season champions, earning the No. 1 seed in the league's postseason tournament, and captured its first unbeaten regular-season finish in program history. The Deacs ended an unbeaten streak of 24 games, dating back to last season, with a 3-2 double-overtime loss to Virginia in the ACC Men's Soccer Championship semifinals in Cary, N.C. ACC Tournament Champion Maryland (18-3-0) was awarded the No. 2 seed and will host the winner of George Mason and Pennsylvania on Nov. 25 at 7 p.m. The Terrapins earn their 26th NCAA appearance in school history and their eighth consecutive and have previously claimed two national College Cup titles, the latest coming in 2005. Virginia, which is making its 30th NCAA appearance, earned the No. 10 seed and will host the winner of Connecticut and Fairfield on Nov. 25 at 7 p.m. The Cavaliers (11-8-1), who currently hold an impressive 47-24-4 record in the NCAA tournament, will be making their 28th straight appearance, an ACC record that dates back to 1981. No. 13 seed North Carolina welcomes the winner of Louisville and Jacksonville on Nov. 25 at 6 p.m. The Tar Heels (11-7-1) own a 17-14-0 record in the tournament and claimed their only men's soccer national title in 2001. Rounding out the NCAA selections from the ACC are at-large selections Boston College and Duke. The Eagles (10-7-2), who make their seventh overall NCAA Tournament appearance and second consecutive, will host Colgate in first-round action in Chestnut Hill, Mass., on Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. The winner advances to face No. 16 seed Dartmouth on Nov. 25 at 6 p.m. In other first-round action, the Duke Blue Devils (10-7-2) hosts in-state foe UNC Greensboro on Nov. 22 at 1 p.m. The winner advances to face ninth-seeded Loyola (Md.) on Nov. 25 at 1 p.m.
The teams will be vying for the right to advance to the 2008 NCAA Men's College Cup, December 12 and 14 in Frisco, Texas, at Pizza Hut Park. Southern Methodist University and FC Dallas will host the championship.
