Oct. 20, 2009
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Boston College's Charlie Rugg and Wake Forest's Austin da Luz share this week's Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Week honor after leading their respective squads to victories over ranked league opponents.
Rugg was involved in all three of unranked Boston College goals scored in its 2-0-0 week and scored both goals in its 2-1 win at No. 2 North Carolina. The freshman forward assisted on classmate Colin Murphy's game-winning goal in a 1-0 victory over Quinnipiac early in the week. As the Eagles' scoring leader with 15 points, six goals and three assists in 13 games, Rugg's two-goal performance marked his second of the season. The Roslindale, Mass., native also scored twice in BC's 3-0 home win over Fairfield on Sept. 15.
Da Luz scored a goal and added four assists in helping No. 5 Wake Forest to a pair of road victories last week. The midfielder assisted on teammate Anthony Arena's game-winning goal in a 1-0 win at College of Charleston in non-conference play early in the week. The assist was his sixth game-winning assist of this season. Da Luz also registered a career-high five points, contributing on all four goals in a 4-1 win at No. 14/12 NC State. The Winston-Salem, N.C., native scored the game-winning goal and assisted on the other three goals, tying a career-high with three assists in a game. The veteran currently leads the team in points with 17, scoring three goals and has an ACC-leading 11 assists. Da Luz has 35 assists in his career, which ranks as the most in school history.
For their efforts, both da Luz and Rugg were named to the College Soccer News' "Team of the Week," while da Luz earned the recognition of National Player of the Week, according to the same organization. The same week da Luz tallied a big performance, his father and Wake Forest head women's soccer coach Tony da Luz made some waves of his own. Thursday night's 2-0 win at NC State was the 200th of da Luz's coaching career. Wake Forest women currently own a five-game unbeaten streak and have not allowed a goal during that span.
Wake Forest men's soccer program is back in action tonight as the squad travels to South Carolina for a 7 p.m. contest, while Boston College next takes on Holy Cross on Wednesday, Oct. 21, also on the road at 7 p.m.
