Oct. 11, 2011
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia junior Will Bates and Duke junior Andrew Wenger have been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Soccer Player Co-Players of the Week.
Bates led the Cavaliers to a 2-1 win over second-ranked previously unbeaten Maryland last Friday night. Wenger scored four of the Blue Devils’ five goals and assisted on the other in a pair of wins over Davidson and NC State.
Bates was instrumental in the key Virginia win. Bates assisted on Ryan Zinkhan’s goal early in the second half and then scored the game-winning goal with just over six minutes remaining in regulation to snap a 1-1 tie vs. the Terrapins.
Bates also created several other scoring chances. The Chester, Va., forward took five shots total, but also dished off in several instances to create scoring opportunities and keep the pressure on the Terrapins’ defense, which had allowed just eight goals all season coming into the match. Bates is currently tied for second among ACC scorers with 24 points (10 goals and four assists).
Wenger, who received his third ACC Player of the Week honor of this season, tallied four goals and nine points overall to help Duke push its unbeaten streak to seven games. Wenger netted the lone goal in Duke’s 1-0 shutout victory over Davidson on Tuesday night. Three days later, he registered his second career hat trick and matched his career-high seven points to lead Duke to a 4-2 win over ACC foe N.C. State.
The Lititz, Pa., forward currently leads the ACC and the nation with 15 goals and 37 points overall. He ranks tied for seventh at Duke in single-season goals and is tied for ninth in single-season points. In Duke’s seven-game unbeaten streak, Wenger has 31 points from 12 goals and seven assists.
