Duke's Joe Germanese Earns ACC Men's Soccer Player of the Week Accolade

Oct. 9, 2006

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Joe Germanese of Duke was named Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Week after notching the game-winning goal in a 2-1 upset victory over No. 3 Virginia last Friday. With the score knotted 1-1, the transfer from Vanderbilt nailed a 20-yard shot past Cavalier goalkeeper Ryan Burke, advancing the No. 6 Blue Devils into a tie with Maryland for first place in the ACC (3-1-1).

In the 57th minute, junior midfielder Michael Videira took a pass from senior forward Chris Loftus, who tapped the ball over to Germanese. The St. Louis, Mo., native then hit his third goal as a Blue Devil and first game-winner, a left-footed line drive from about 20 yards out in the back right corner of the net.

Germanese ranks fourth among Duke players in both shots (18) and points (10) on the season. The junior has tallied three goals and four assists for the Blue Devils this season.

The win for the Blue Devils also marked career win number 389 for Coach John Rennie, making him the all-time victory leader for an ACC coach. He is also just one win behind Clemson's I.M. Ibrahim with 89 victories in ACC play.

Next up for Germanese and the Blue Devils is a match against Davidson on Wednesday, October 11. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. ET at Koskinen Stadium.
