![]() Maryland's Kevin Tangney Collects ACC Men's Soccer Weekly Honor
Sept. 29, 2009
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Maryland’s Kevin Tangney was named Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Soccer Player of the Week after leading his fourth-ranked Terrapins to a pair of victories, including a down-to-the-wire upset over second-ranked North Carolina. With the win over the Tar Heels, Maryland extended its unbeaten streak to six games and earned its 600th program victory in men's soccer history. The senior captain came up big for the Terps when his header found the upper right corner of the net with less than two minutes remaining in regulation to give Maryland the edge it needed to top North Carolina 1-0 in front of a Ludwig Field record crowd of 6,946. Tangney, who provided a vital role in back-to-back defensive shutouts over Saint Peter’s and North Carolina, was also named to the College Soccer News Team of the Week and featured on the NCAA.com. The story, written by Kevin Scheitrum, details Tangney's inspirational return to the Terrapin back line after two separate ACL surgeries sidelined him for two seasons. Maryland returns to action later today when it travels to George Mason, a foe the Terps faced in the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season. Game time is slated for 8 p.m. ET.
