Michael Callahan always wanted to go to North Carolina and play soccer for the Tar Heels. He got his wish and was selected as a captain his senior year. He took time to talk with theACC.com about playing soccer, what he does off the field and balancing academics and athletics.

What is something that most people don't know about you?
I play the guitar. I have an acoustic and electric. I play classic rock, John Mayer…a lot of different stuff.

When and how did you start playing soccer?
I started when I was five when I lived in Colorado.
Quick Facts
Favorite Movie: Gladiator
Favorite Pro Athlete: Paul Scholes
Hidden Skill: Playing Guitar

What other sports did you play in high school?
Not in high school. I played baseball when I was younger until soccer took over.

What made you choose soccer?
Honestly…because I was better at [soccer]. (Laughs)

What club teams did you play on? ODP?
When I was in Colorado I played for a team called the Lobos. Then all the time I lived in North Carolina I played with CASL (Capital Area Soccer League). They are the big club here. I played on the state ODP team for five or six years and I was on the region team for two years, my junior and senior years.

What is the most interesting place you've been with soccer?
I've been to some really cool places. I went to Italy and England with my club team. My regional team went down to Uruguay for a tournament. It was really cool.

Why did you choose North Carolina?
I grew up here. My brother went to school here (at North Carolina). He's two years older than me. He didn't play soccer or anything, but he went here. I just love it here. It is such a great school and such a great soccer program. It's just perfect.

What do you consider your greatest accomplishment so far as an athlete?
Being named team captain was a big honor coming into my senior year. And, last year, being named to the ACC All-Tournament team was a really big accomplishment for me.

What do you want to do after you graduate?
I'm not sure yet. If I can play professionally, I would love to do that and see how far I can take soccer. If not, I really have no (set plan). I do want to live somewhere where I can snowboard. That is something I love to do.

What do you do when you're away from the field?
I enjoy playing the guitar, hanging out with friends, watching movies. Last winter I really got into snowboarding.

How do you manage to maintain a strong academic record and be a key performer on the field?
It is really about time management and planning. If I know I have a test coming up, I plan ahead and study for a few days so I'm not staying up and not getting any sleep before a game. Time management is what it all comes down to.

What is the best advice you have ever received from a coach?
The best advice I ever received was from my club coach for two years in high school, Carlos Somoano, who is actually an assistant coach here in Chapel Hill. The best advice I got from him applies not only on the field, but also in life. He said that everything you do, do it 100 percent and do it the best you can. Be the best you can at it.

What is your game day routine?
We always have our pregame meals at The Loop, Spanky's or 411 West. My routine is to go to the pregame meal, then come home and play guitar for a little bit. Then I get a shower and head out to the field. I have my own little ritual.

What are your expectations for your team this season?
I want to see this team get to the level that every time we step out on the field, teams hate to play against us. We dictate the pace of play and ultimately at the end of the year, we are contending for an ACC championship and NCAA championship.

Callahan and the Tar Heels return to action on Saturday when they host East Tennessee State at 7 p.m.
