UNC's Wescoe and Wake Forest's Tracy Share First 2008 ACC Men's Soccer Honors
Sept. 2, 2008
GREENSBORO, N.C. – North Carolina’s Jacob Wescoe and Wake Forest’s Marcus Tracy were named Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Soccer Co-Players of the Week after leading their respective squads to a pair of wins at the Nike Carolina Classic last week. Wescoe helped the 24th-ranked Tar Heels collect two shutout wins to open the 2008 season, while Tracy scored a game-winning goal in a pair of victories for the No. 1 Demon Deacons.
In the first regular season action of his career, goalkeeper Wescoe compiled six saves and did not allow a goal at UNC's annual home event. After making one save in a 3-0 win over Florida International Friday, the North Carolina senior made a career-best five stops Sunday in the 1-0 overtime victory over VCU. Tracy scored game-winning goals in two victories for Wake Forest last week at the Nike Carolina Classic. The senior forward scored his first goal of the season in the 58th minute against VCU on a header from just inside the six-yard box. He then scored the game-winner against Florida International in the 57th minute. Tracy headed the ball into the lower left hand part of the net to give Wake a 1-0 lead. After just one weekend of non-conference play, Tracy leads the Deacs in goals with two and is tied for the team lead in points with four. His marks in both categories are tied for second among league players. Earning all-tournament honors for their performances over the weekend, both seniors and their respective squads return to competition on Friday in Wake Forest’s Deacon Fall Classic. North Carolina will face South Carolina at 5 p.m. ET, while host Wake Forest welcomes UCLA at 8 p.m.
