GREENSBORO, N.C. – Three Atlantic Coast Conference student-athletes are among the 42 on the Missouri Athletic Club’s MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List for the 2012 men’s soccer season.
Representing the ACC are Maryland defender Taylor Kemp and midfielder John Stertzer, and Virginia forward Will Bates. Kemp and Stertzer were both NSCAA All-South Atlantic First Team selections in 2011, while Bates earned second team honors. Stertzer also earned NSCAA Third Team All-America accolades following the 2011 season.
The ACC has had 15 MAC Hermann Award Trophy winners including last season’s recipient, Duke midfielder Andrew Wenger.
A total of 34 different schools and 10 countries are represented on the2012 list including players from the United States, Brazil, Colombia, England, France, Ghana, Ireland, Jamaica, Spain and New Zealand. Iona leads the pack with four selections.
The MAC Hermann Trophy is the highest individual award in intercollegiate soccer. The recipients are selected by head coaches of NCAA Division I programs who are members of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
The list will be narrowed down by NSCAA members from Division I programs to 15 semifinalists by Nov. 29. Member coaches and fans will then vote for their top three choices and the finalists will be announced Dec. 6. The winner will be announced at the awards’ banquet at the Missouri Athletic Club on Friday, Jan. 11.
