Maddogsoccer Picks Terps 27th In Men's Soccer Preseason Poll
July 20, 2001 In the first preseason poll of the year, Maddogsoccer.com has picked the Maryland men's soccer team to begin the season at No. 27. Maryland is one of six ACC teams either ranked or receiving votes. The ACC's six teams are the most for any conference in the poll. Maryland is slated to play eight teams that are either ranked or receiving votes in the poll. In 2001, the Terps will face No. 2 Virginia (Nov. 2- Home), No. 4 Creighton (Sept. 9- Home), No. 10 UCLA (Aug. 31- at Virginia), Clemson (Oct. 28- Away), South Carolina (Oct. 19- Away), North Carolina (Oct. 7- Away), Duke (Sept. 22- Away), and Wake Forest (Sept. 29- Home). After weathering the storm of seven season-ending injuries, the Terps are coming off a 10-9 year in which they narrowly missed the NCAA tournament. Maryland returns fourteen letterwinners this season, including All-America candidate Beckett Hollenbach (Havertown, Pa.) and last year's leading scorer Abe Thompson (Alexandria, Va.), who finished the year with 13 goals and five assists. Thompson is also listed on Maddogsoccer's list of "21 finishers to keep an eye on in 2001." Maddog Soccer's Preseason Top 30 1. Southern Methodist 16. Washington 2. Virginia 17. South Carolina 3.
