Wake Forest/Elon Men's Soccer Match to Benefit The V Foundation
July 17, 2006 ELON, N.C. - The Elon men's soccer program today announced that its September 13 match with Wake Forest will benefit The V Foundation for Cancer Research. A portion of all ticket proceeds, as well as the money raised by a silent auction will go directly to The V Foundation. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. under the lights at Rhodes Stadium on the Elon campus. Gates will open at 6:00 p.m. at which time the silent auction will begin. One dollar of each six dollar ticket will go directly to The V Foundation. Youth team members who wear their jerseys to the game will be admitted free as will children under five. The silent auction will include items such as autographed jerseys and balls. Last year's game with UNC Greensboro raised over $2,000 for The V Foundation. ESPN and the late Jim Valvano created The V Foundation in 1993. Valvano, the legendary N.C. State basketball coach and ESPN broadcaster, won the hearts of sports fans across the country when his underdog N.C. State Wolfpack captured the NCAA Basketball Championship in an upset win in 1983. Since then, the Foundation that was conceived by a small group of Jim's friends and colleagues has grown to include donors and volunteers nationwide. Since 1993, The V Foundation has raised more than $50 million and awarded research grants in 36 states and the District of Columbia.
