Pope, Zavagnin Picked for MLS All-Star Game
July 16, 2004 CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Former North Carolina men's soccer standouts Eddie Pope and Kerry Zavagnin have been selected to play in the 2004 Major League Soccer All-Star Game, scheduled for July 31 at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. Pope, a defender for the New York/New Jersey MetroStars, was the leading all-star vote-getter from MLS players and will start for the Eastern Conference. A national team veteran, Pope is making his eighth-consecutive all-star appearance. He starred at Carolina from 1992-95 and played in both the 1998 and 2002 World Cups. Zavagnin, a midfielder for the Kansas City Wizards, is making his first all-star appearance as a reserve for the Western Conference. Also at Carolina from 1992-95, Zavagnin is in his sixth season in MLS and fifth with Kansas City. He is a member of the U.S. Men's National Team Pool and has earned four of his six caps in 2004.
The 2004 MLS All-Star Game airs July 31 at 2 p.m. on ABC.
