Media Relations Office Receives Ten Citations For Excellence
July 5, 2000 College Park, Md.- - The University of Maryland Media Relations Department recently received 10 citations for excellence in publications at the annual CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors) convention, held between June 25-28 in St. Louis, Mo. The Terrapin staff's honors were highlighted by a Best in the Nation citation for its men's soccer media guide, as well as four other Top 10 media publications, which included men's lacrosse (second in the nation for single sport brochures), women's lacrosse (third in the nation for single sport brochures), gymnastics (fourth in the nation), and field hockey (seventh in the nation for single sport brochures). Maryland's Publications Coordinator is Jason Yellin, who is in his third year with the Terrapin staff. Yellin is responsible for the layout of all books, as well as the text content for the 2000 men's lacrosse media guide, which finished second in the nation in the single-sport contest. Yellin teamed with first-year Terrapin Assistant Media Relations Director Stephanie Mociun for the Best in the Nation men's soccer publication. The 2000 Maryland women's lacrosse guide was also written and edited by Mociun, and finished third in the nation in the single-sport category (first nationally among women's lacrosse publications). Former Terrapin student assistant Matt Levy, now in graduate school at Rutgers University, and current Maryland undergraduate student assistant Cherise Rhyns were both responsible for writing and editing the 2000 women's gymnastics media guide, which finished fourth nationally. Assistant Director of Media Relations Chuck Walsh wrote and edited the Terrapin's men's basketball media guide, which received recognition for being 11th nationally (first in District 2). Associate Athletic Director for Athletic Media Relations Dave Haglund and Associate Director of Athletic Media Relations Kevin Messenger were both honored for the Terps 2000 football media guide, which came in second in District 2. Messenger also wrote and edited the 2000 men's golf media guide, which ranked second in District 1 and 2 combined). Former Terrapin Staff Assistant David O'Brian picked up two CoSIDA honors, including the best women's volleyball brochure in District 2. O'Brian's field hockey guide also finished seventh in the nation in the single sport category, while holding the distinction of being the top field hockey media guide in the country. O'Brian recently accepted a position at Binghamton as an Assistant Director of Media Relations. The University of Maryland's wrestling media guide, written and edited by former Terrapin student assistant Kevin Foley, now with SFX Sports, finished 11th nationally.
