Tomek Charowski Represents Canada At FIFA World Youth Championship
June 22, 2005 AMSTERDAM - Tomek Charowski, a rising sophomore and Duke midfielder, has spent the last two weeks representing Canada as a member of that nation's Under-20 National Team at the FIFA World Youth Championship. Charowski, who was born in Poland and whose family currently resides in South Carolina, spent the middle part of his life in Canada, where he still maintains citizenship. The Canadian squad played Syria to a 1-1 tie in the opening game of the preliminary round and Charowski came off the bench to play 36 minutes, the most of any substitute. The Canadians then dropped their next two matches, a 2-0 loss to Colombia and a 4-1 loss to powerhouse Italy. With a mark of 0-1-2 in the preliminary round, Canada was unable to advance to the tournament. Charowski finished his freshman campaign at Duke with five goals and his 10 assists tied him for second-most on the team. He played in 23 of the team's 24 games and made 15 starts. Three of his five goals came in the NCAA Tournament.
