Virginia Men's Soccer Announces 2001 Schedule
June 14, 2001 CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - University of Virginia men's soccer head coach George Gelnovatch has announced the 2001 UVa men's soccer schedule. Known for playing one of the most difficult schedules in the country, Virginia will once again face a variety of challenging teams in the upcoming 2001 season. The Cavaliers have 17 regular season contests scheduled, including 11 games at Klöckner Stadium. UVa will play four regular season road games and two neutral site contests before competing in the 2001 ACC Tournament. Prior to beginning collegiate competition, Virginia will travel to Europe and participate in several exhibition contests. The Cavaliers will face PSV on August 18th and Feyenoord on August 19 in the Netherlands before heading to Munich, Germany to face 1860 Munich on August 22nd. A possible fourth exhibition contest may be added on August 24th. Virginia begins the regular season portion of its schedule by hosting the 2001 Virginia Soccer Classic on August 31st and September 2nd. UVa will open its 2001 season with a match against the Liberty Flames on August 31st before facing national power UCLA on September 2nd. The Cavaliers will then play two neutral site games when they compete in the 2001 Fila/Maryland Classic on September 7th & 9th in College Park, Md. at the University of Maryland. Virginia will face the American Eagles on September 7th before it battles National Runner-Up Creighton on September 9th. Creighton ended UVa's 2000 season when the Bluejays defeated the Cavaliers in the quarterfinals of the 2001 NCAA Tournament. UVa will return to action by hosting three consecutive home contest including back-to-back games with ACC foes Wake Forest (September 15th) and North Carolina (September 22). After a non-conference match with in-state rival William & Mary on September 26th, Virginia will play its first away game of the year with a contest against the N.C. State Wolfpack in Raleigh, N.C. on September 30th. The Cavaliers will play back-to-back non-conference games by hosting the Temple Owls on October 2nd before playing their only non-conference road game of the 2001 season with a contest at Virginia Commonwealth on October 6th in Richmond, Va. UVa will then play four of its next five games at home (vs. Clemson, vs. Mercer, @ Duke, vs. East Carolina, vs. UNC-Greensboro) before closing the season with a pair of matches at Maryland (November 2nd) and at home against James Madison (November 9th). UVa will then travel to Clemson, S.C. to compete in the 2001 ACC Tournament on November 15th-18th at Riggs Field on the campus of Clemson University.
