CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - University of Virginia men's soccer head coach George Gelnovatch has announced the 2002 UVa men's soccer schedule. Virginia will once again face a variety of challenging teams in the upcoming 2002 men's soccer season. The Cavaliers have 18 regular season contests scheduled, including 12 home games at Klöckner Stadium. UVa will also play two exhibition contests, three regular season road games and three neutral site contests before competing in the 2002 Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament.

Prior to the start of its 2002 regular season, Virginia will travel to Fort Wayne, Indiana to compete in the IPFW Invitational, a pre-season soccer tournament hosted by Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne. There, UVa will play two exhibition games against Big Ten opponents, first against the Michigan State Spartans (August 23rd) before meeting the Indiana Hoosiers (August 25th).

Following its two exhibition matches, UVa will kick off the regular season portion of its schedule by hosting the 2002 Virginia Soccer Classic. Joining Virginia in the tournament field will be the Kentucky Wildcats, the Rhode Island Rams and the Maryland Terrapins. UVa will face Kentucky on August 30th before meeting Rhode Island on September 1st. The following weekend, the Cavaliers will travel to College Park, Md. to compete in the 2002 Maryland/Fila Classic. Virginia will meet the Virginia Commonwealth Rams on September 6th before battling the Penn State Nittany Lions on September 8th.

Following UVa's back-to-back weekends of tournament play, the Cavaliers will dive into ACC action by playing two consecutive conference road games. First, Virginia will travel to Winston-Salem, N.C. to face the Wake Forest Demon Deacons on September 14th in UVa's conference opening game before heading to Chapel Hill, N.C. the following weekend for a match against the North Carolina Tar Heels on September 21st. Virginia will then travel to Virginia Beach, Va. for a non-conference game against the William & Mary Tribe at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex facility on September 25th.

UVa will return home to Charlottesville to host three consecutive home games beginning with an ACC contest against the N.C. State Wolfpack on September 28th. Virginia will then host the Marshall Thundering Herd on October 2nd before facing Hartwick on October 4th. The Cavaliers will then make their final regular season road trip when they travel to Clemson, S.C. to face the Clemson Tigers on October 13th.

UVa will close out the regular season portion of its 2002 schedule with seven consecutive home games from October 16th - November 8th, beginning with a contest with the Liberty Flames on October 16th. Virginia will then face the Duke Blue Devils in an ACC match on October 20th before hosting a pair of non-conference games against the Old Dominion Monarchs (October 23rd) and the American Eagles (October 26th). The Cavaliers will then play their final ACC regular season game when they host the Maryland Terrapins on November 1st before hosting a pair of non-conference games against the Pittsburgh Panthers (November 5th) and the Temple Owls (November 8th) to close out the regular season. UVa will then compete in the 2002 ACC Men's Soccer Championships on November 13-17 in Cary, N.C.
