Feb. 20, 2012
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Duke junior forward Andrew Wenger has been named the 2011 Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year and heads up the sport’s All-ACC Academic Team, as announced today by Commissioner John Swofford.
All nine league schools that compete in men’s soccer are represented on this year’s
All-ACC Academic Team, which includes eight players that were named first- or second-team All-ACC and four that earned All-ACC Freshmen honors. Five were named Academic All-America by CoSIDA/Capital One and/or the NSCAA, and four earned All-District academic honors.
The most decorated men’s college soccer player in ACC history, Wenger was voted the conference’s Freshman of the Year in 2009 and the league’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2010 before being named the ACC Offensive Player of the Year in 2011. A consensus first-team All-America choice this past season, Wenger received the MAC Hermann Trophy, awarded annually to the top player in NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer.
In addition to being selected as the No. 1 overall pick in this year’s MLS Draft by the Montreal Impact, Wenger led the ACC in goals (17) and in scoring (42 points). The Lititz, Pa., native and History major also excelled in the classroom, becoming just the second Duke men’s soccer player to earn CoSIDA/Capital One first-team Academic All-America honors and also receiving NSCAA Scholar All-America first-team accolades.
The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their career as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.
To be eligible for All-ACC Academic Team consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.
