Soccer America Selects Maryland's Twellman Freshman of the Year
January 19, 1999 COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Soccer America awarded Maryland freshman Taylor Twellman (St. Louis, Mo.) its men's freshman of the year honors for 1998. Twellman became the go-to-guy on the forward line for the Terrapins. His 40 points 16 goals (six gamewinners) and eight assists led the team by a large margin. The Terrapins would not have reached the final four in Richmond without the stellar play of Twellman. He scored the game-winning goal against Richmond in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, and a week later, also knocked in the game-winner against Jacksonville in the second round.
Twellman was joined on the all-freshman team by three other Terrapin teammates, Dan Califf (Orange, Calif.), Beckett Hollenbach (Havertown, Pa.) and Nick Downing (Redmond, Wash.). Califf was one of three Terps to start and play in all 24 games, while Downing missed just one game due to an injury. Hollenbach finished the year as the Terps' fifth leading scorer.
Of the 11 players selected to the team, Maryland was the only school to place more than one player on the team.
