McDaniel Goal Pushes Duke Into Second Round DURHAM, N.C.-Duke University senior Ryan McDaniel tallied his first career goal to help the 20th-ranked Blue Devils hold off a tough Winthrop squad 3-2 in the first round of the NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament. Duke advances to the second round to take on 14th-seed Michigan State on Nov. 22 at 1 p.m. Duke (13-6-0) grabbed an early 2-0 lead before the Eagles rallied back in the early minutes of the second half to make it 2-1. McDaniel registered what proved to be the game-winner in the 73rd minute and the Blue Devil backline held off the nation's fourth-ranked scoring offense in the final 17 minutes to come away with the win. Looking to get out of the first round since 2006, Duke came out of the gates fast. Winthrop (11-6-4) held the possession for the first two minutes before the Blue Devils made the most of their first attacking opportunity in the third minute. Taylor's Overtime Goal Lifts Boston College To NCAA Tournament's Second Round NEWTON, Mass. - Freshman Issac Taylor scored the golden goal - the first score of his collegiate career - to lift Boston College to a 2-1 double-overtime victory over Dartmouth in the first round of the 2009 NCAA Men's Soccer Championship before 619 fans at the Newton Campus Field Thursday night. Taylor's goal came from 23 yards out on a half volley and was assisted by classmate Colin Murphy in the 103rd minute. Freshman goalkeeper Justin Luthy made six saves in the match to improve to 12-7-0 on the season. Dartmouth, which outshot BC 6-3 in the first 45 minutes, led 1-0 at halftime. Dartmouth junior Daniel Keat scored the game's first goal at 29:53. The Wellington, New Zealand native one-timed a cross from Luckymore Mkosana for his eighth goal of the season. Both teams attempted 11 shots in the match as BC outshot the visiting Big Green 3-0 in 12 minutes, 57 seconds of overtime play. COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland utilized an up-tempo start Thursday night to down Loyola (Md.), 2-1, in NCAA Men's Soccer Championship First Round action at Ludwig Field. The Terps (13-5-2) picked up its two scores within a three-minute span in-and-around the 35th minute as Casey Townsend and Drew Yates each tallied their fifth goals of the season. Maryland, which entered this year's postseason unseeded for the first time since 2001, mustered 13 shots in the first half alone, including six within a four-minute stretch.
