CARY, N.C. -- In the first match of the 2002 Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Soccer Championship, No. 4 seeded Virginia defeated No. 5 seeded Duke 4-1 at the SAS Stadium in the SAS Soccer Complex in Cary, N.C.

The Cavaliers scored first on a goal by Ryan Kelly, assisted by Jacob LeBlanc in the 24th minute. Duke evened the things up when Danny Kramer fed Owoicho Adogwa to even the game up before the first half concluded.

Virginia came out of the locker room firing, and scored the eventual gamewinner from Ryan Gibbs at the 46:54 mark. LeBlanc was credited with the assist.

The Cavaliers added two more goals from ACC Player of the Year Alecko Eskandarian to insure their advance into the semifinals to meet No. 1 seed Wake Forest at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, November 15. Eskandarian's goals gave him 24 for the year, setting the new single-season record for the Cavaliers.

Virginia improves its record to 14-5, while Duke leaves Cary 11-7-1. No. 2 seed Maryland and No. 7 seed NC State will play in ACC quarterfinal game two beginning at 5:30 p.m. with No. 3 seed North Carolina and No. 6 seed Clemson serving as the nightcap at 8:00 p.m.
