Virginia Scores Four In OT to Put Away Pack
November 12, 1998 WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - No. 2 seeded Virginia required two extra periods to put away No. 7 seeded NC State 4-0 in the second quarterfinal match of the Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Soccer Tournament at W. Dennie Spry Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Wolfpack held the nation's fifth-ranked team scoreless through the first 100 minutes of play before the Cavaliers loaded the net in the two 15-minute overtimes. Michael Green put Virginia on the board as he scored only his second collegiate goal with a header off of a corner kick from Ryan Trout at the 100:03 mark of the first overtime to put the Cavaliers up 1-0. First-team All-ACC forward Chris Albright added the second goal at the 108:06 mark with a 10-yard shot on a lob pass from Marshall Leonard. Less than two minutes later, Trout got in the scoring column with a 15-yard shot into the goal at the 110:00 mark. The Cavaliers' Curtis Bush added the final goal with a head flick off the cross from Trout. Virginia advances to Friday's semifinals of the ACC Tournament where the team will face the winner of the Duke - Wake Forest match at 8:00 PM. The Cavaliers are 6-2-3 in the semifinals advancing to the tournament championship match each of the last eight years.
