Maryland Blanks Virginia, 2-0, In ACC Men's Soccer Championship Semifinals
Nov. 12, 2010
CARY, N.C. - Behind two goals from senior Jason Herrick, the second-seeded Maryland Terrapins defeated the sixth-seeded Virginia Cavaliers, 2-0, in the first semifinal match of the ACC Men's Soccer Championship Friday night at WakeMed Soccer Park.
"It feels great to move on and play Sunday," said Maryland head coach Sasho Cirovski. "The team competed very hard. The ACC Soccer Championship is a place where we belong. It is the toughest tournament in the country."
Herrick took advantage of a Maryland corner kick, giving the Terrapins the lead at the 36:34 mark. Casey Townsend's shot was blocked by the Virginia defense, but Herrick's first goal of the night found the back of the net from four yards out. It was the team-leading ninth goal of the year for the first-team All-ACC honoree.
Virginia had a chance to even the score with just 1:19 remaining in the first half on a Brian Ownby penalty kick. First-team All-ACC goalkeeper Zac MacMath preserved the Terrapin lead, however, knocking the ball wide of the net.
The Terrapins extended their lead to 2-0 in the 71st minute on Herrick's second goal of the match. Herrick put the ball in the goal from five yards out off a Taylor Kemp free kick.
The 13th-ranked Cavaliers played evenly with the third-ranked Terrapins, holding an 11-10 advantage in shots and 3-2 edge in corner kicks. MacMath assured Herrick's goals stood up, registering four saves in his conference-leading 12th shutout of the year.
"We didn't deserve to lose 2-0," Virginia coach George Gelnovatch said. "We played real well and hard. Maryland scored both of their goals on restarts. They capitalize on those opportunities."
Maryland (16-2-1), which won its 12th consecutive match, will play for its fifth ACC championship at 1:00 p.m. Sunday. The Terrapins will face the winner of Friday night's second semifinal match between North Carolina and Boston College.
Virginia (11-5-3) will await Monday's NCAA Selection Show to learn when and where it will next play.
