Schuler's Double Paces UNC Past Elon, 2-1 Carolina forced Elon goalie Clint Irwin into three saves in the first 10 minutes of play before the Phoenix came close to going ahead in the 11th minute. Thomas headed a shot on target that rattled off the crossbar before teammate Justin Wyatt's shot was saved by UNC's Scott Goodwin. Goodwin, who started in goal for the third straight game, made a season-high three saves. The Tar Heels held the upper hand throughout the rest of the half and finally broke through in the 42nd minute courtesy of Schuler. The Allentown, N.J., product beat his defender in the box and fired a strike into the back of the net from 12 yards out to make it 1-0. Forbess Lifts Terps Past Navy The Terps (11-4-2) snapped a two-game scoring drought at 9:57 when Forbess notched his second goal of the season. The sophomore midfielder faked a pass and then struck the ball from 20 yards out into the upper left corner for an early 1-0 Maryland lead. Navy nearly came back when the Midshipmen tallied three shots in succession in the 32nd minute. The first two were blocked, including one by Forbess at the goal line and concluded when Wes Powell's shot went wide. Maryland outshot Navy, 9-4, in the first half and kept the Midshipmen on defense for the vast majority of the period.
No. 7 Virginia Defeats American, 3-0 The seventh-ranked Virginia men's soccer team remained unbeaten in non-conference play this season by defeating American, 3-0, Tuesday night at Klöckner Stadium. For the year, Virginia has an 8-0-1 record vs. non-conference foes. Jonathan Villanueva (Grand Prairie, Texas), Will Bates (Chester, Va.) and Tony Tchani (Norfolk, Va.) each scored a goal for the Cavaliers. With the win, Virginia improved to 11-3-2 overall. The Cavaliers shut out their fourth-consecutive opponent, while goalkeeper and this week's ACC Co-Player of the Week Diego Restrepo posted his eighth shutout of the season. He finished with three saves. Villanueva took a free kick with his left foot from the edge of the penalty box area in the 41st minute and put the shot on target. American goalkeeper Matt Makowski dived to his right, but Villanueva's shot found the lower left corner of the net. #14 NC State Surges Past Presbyterian, 4-2 NC State would jump out to the lead in the 18th minute of play. Junior Chris Zuerner won a ball in midfield and found senior Federico Nachmann on the left wing. Nachmann took a couple of dribbles into the middle of the field, and found sophomore Kris Byrd for his fifth goal of the season at the 17:10 mark. Presbyterian would even things up just before the half. The Blue Hoses were awarded a penalty kick after a NC State handball in the box, and Zach Sinkuler converted the kick for the tying goal at the 41:09 mark. Clemson Defeats Longwood 3-1 Savage is a freshman forward from Summerville, SC. He scored two goals last Tuesday in Clemson's 6-0 win over North Greenville and scored the game winner in Clemson's 1-0 upset win over 11th-ranked N.C. State last Friday night. Savage was named the ACC Player of the Week for his performance. Clemson improves to 5-10-1 overall this season, Longwood falls to 5-11-2 this season. The Tigers have now won three matches in a row. |
