![]() Men's Soccer ACCtion: Saturday, October 31
Oct. 31, 2009 Duke Rolls Past Virginia Tech on Senior Night DURHAM, N.C.-Duke University sophomore Daniel Tweed-Kent tallied two goals as the 16th-ranked Blue Devils rolled to a 4-1 victory on Senior Night over visiting Virginia Tech in ACC men's soccer action. The game was the final regular season home contest for the seven seniors, Josh Bienenfeld, Michael Burdick, Trae Harrison, Jordan Lewis, Ryan McDaniel, Eduardo Meza, and Matt Thomas. Duke (12-4-0, 4-3-0 ACC) drew first blood in the 16th minute when Andrew Wenger rifled a shot on goal from 25 yards. Virginia Tech goalkeeper Stefan Caulfield made the initial save, but could not hold on to the ball and Tweed-Kent followed up and poked the ball in the early 1-0 lead. Five minutes later Tweed-Kent struck again with a strike past the near post from nearly 15 yards out. Junior Cole Grossman and freshman Ryan Finley provided the assists after nice combination work to get into the offensive third of the field. The goal was Tweed-Kent's third of the season and his first multiple-goal contest. Maryland and Virginia Battle to Scoreless Tie COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 6 Maryland men's soccer team battled No. 10 Virginia to a 0-0 tie in Atlantic Coast Conference action Saturday night at Ludwig Field. Wet playing conditions and steady defensive play kept both offenses quiet with only a total of seven shots taken in the first half. Virginia came dangerously close to breaking the scoreless tie in the 25th minute when Neil Barlow had a one-on-one opportunity just inside the box but Zac MacMath won the race to the ball to keep the Cavaliers off the board.
Casey Townsend, who returned to the starting lineup for the first time since Oct. 9, had a shot blocked in the 26th minute then was a key component to the Terps next drive two minutes later. The sophomore forward changed fields with a pass over to a streaking Billy Cortes down the far sideline. Cortes centered the ball but Virginia was able to clear. |
