Rugg's Two Goals Lead Boston College In 2-1 Win At No. 2 North Carolina Freshman Charlie Rugg scored two first-half goals and freshman goalkeeper Justin Luthy made nine saves as Boston College earned a 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference victory over second-ranked North Carolina before 1,811 fans at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill, N.C. Rugg's goals, Nos. 5 and 6 of the season, came early in the first half. He lifted the visitors to a one-goal lead in the 14th minute and doubled the team's lead in the 25th. Junior co-captain Karl Reddick assisted on Rugg's first goal and classmate Kyle Bekker assisted on Rugg's second score. Luthy tallied three saves in the game's first 45 minutes and six saves in the second half to earn the victory. The Eagles, who have won each of their last three games, improve to 8-6 overall and 3-2 in ACC play. North Carolina outshot BC, 16-7, including a 7-2 advantage in second-half action. No. 5 Wake Forest Posts Impressive 4-1 Win at No. 14 NC State Senior midfielder Austin da Luz contributed on all four Wake Forest goals, scoring one and assisting on the other three, as the fifth-ranked Demon Deacons defeated No. 14 NC State 4-1 on Saturday night at Dail Soccer Stadium.
With the win, Wake Forest improves to 9-2-2 and 3-1-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. NC State drops to 9-3-1 overall and 2-3-1 in conference play. The Demon Deacons jumped on the Wolfpack early, as Zack Schilawski scored in the fifth minute. Da Luz doubled the lead with a 39th minute tally. After NC State cut the lead to 2-1 on a goal from Kris Byrd in the 61st minute, Wake Forest responded with goals from Andy Lubahn and Ike Opara in the 69th and 71st minutes to put the game away. Da Luz continued his stellar senior season, tying a career high with three assists and also scoring his third goal of the season. The five points in a game marked a new career high for da Luz. With the three assists, da Luz now has an ACC-best 11 helpers on the season and 35 in his career. No. 11 Virginia Downs Virginia Tech, 3-1 Will Bates (Chester, Va.) scored twice, including the game-winner in the 57th minute, to lead the No. 11-ranked Virginia men's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Virginia Tech Saturday night in Blacksburg. Virginia Tech (3-8-2, 2-3 ACC) got on the board first in the 13th minute when Brendan Dunn scored his first goal of the year off of an assist by Charlie Campbell. Virginia (8-3-1, 2-3 ACC) countered before the end of the half, as Neil Barlow (Herndon, Va.) scored his team-high fourth goal of the year in the 43rd minute. Barlow's goal was unassisted and the teams remained tied, 1-1, until the 57th minute. It was then that Bates headed a loose ball into the top corner of the net to put the Cavaliers up, 2-1. |
