October 14, 1998

RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State built a 3-0 first-half lead, then relied on its defense in the second half to earn a 3-1 win over Mount St. Mary's today at Method Road Soccer Stadium.

The Wolfpack took a 1-0 lead at the 24:03 mark, when sophomore midfielder Shaker Asad took a cross from Nick Olivencia out of the air and booted it past Mount St. Mary's goalkeeper Rob Ray. A goal by junior co-captain Sebastian Rodriguez gave NC State a 2-0 lead at the 35:29 mark. Rodriguez took an assist from freshman Michael Karim, then beat a charging keeper and dropped the ball into a wide-open net on the score. Just before the halftime break, freshman Chris Wargin of Raleigh, N.C., slipped a shot past the goalkeeper to give NC State a 3-0 lead.

In the second half, a header by Mount St. Mary's Duncan Gladwin at the 85:02 mark prevented a shutout. NC State fought off nine second-half shots by the Mountaineers as Wolfpack goalkeeper Eric Handley recorded three saves.

NC State (4-8, 0-3) returns to action this Sunday, hosting No. 3 Duke at 2:00 p.m. at Method Road Soccer Stadium. Mount St. Mary's falls to 6-5-2 overall.
