Oct. 2, 2009
Schilawski Nets Hat Trick and Assist in No. 3 Wake's 5-1 Win at Virginia Tech With the win, Wake Forest improves to 6-2-1 on the season and 2-1-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. Virginia Tech is now 3-4-2 and 2-1-0 in league play. After only scoring one goal in the first eight games of the season, Schilawski broke out in a big way with a career-high three goals and seven points. The hat trick marked the 24th time that a Demon Deacon player had scored at least three goals in a game, with the last time coming on October 4, 2008, when Cody Arnoux scored three goals, also against Virginia Tech. With his performance tonight, Schilawski now has four goals on the season and two assists. No. 5 Tar Heels Take OT Thriller From No. 12 Virginia With the top two defensive squads in the ACC on the pitch, neither team could find the back of the net until Brown deposited his third game-winner with just 1:39 left in the second overtime period. Captain Zach Loyd sent a throw in from the right side into the box, and Jordan Graye flicked it to the left to Brown, who buried an eight-yard header at the near post for his career-best fourth goal of the season. Loyd earned his second assist off a throw in this year on the play, while Graye picked up his first helper. Blue Devils Upset No. 2 and Defending National Champion Maryland Freshman Ryan Finley tallied what proved to be the game-winner, while senior Trae Harrison clinched the victory with his first career goal. Neither team created outstanding scoring opportunities in the opening 45 minutes. Duke (7-2-0, 2-2-0 ACC) created the best chance of the first half when Nick Sih flighted a perfect ball over the heads of the Maryland (5-2-2, 2-2-0 ACC) defense. Finley got in behind the backline and ran straight to goal, but a pair of Maryland defenders put just enough pressure on the Duke forward to slow him down and help Zac MacMath make his third save of the opening half. Lassiter’s Two Goals Lead #24 Pack over BC in OT, 2-1 Boston College (5-5, 1-2 ACC) would get on the scoreboard early, as the Eagles were awarded a penalty kick in just the sixth minute of the contest. Conor Fitzpatrick would take the kick, and open up the scoring at the 5:25 mark. NC State would also be awarded its first penalty kick of the game after a handball in the box 15 minutes in, but senior Ronnie Bouemboue’s attempt was saved by the Eagles Justin Luthy. The Pack would also have a goal called back, when Lassiter slotted home an apparent goal in the 35th minute, but the Pack was called for offsides.
