Bucy Carries Carolina to 3-2 Win at Winthrop
September 24, 1998 ROCK HILL, S.C. - North Carolina's Michael Bucy scored two goals and added an assist to lead the visiting Tar Heels to a 3-2 victory Wednesday night over Winthrop University. The win improves UNC to 5-2 while the Eagles fall to 6-3 after suffering their third loss in the last four games. Bucy put UNC on the board 27 minutes into the game on a smash off an assist from Joey DiSalvo. The Tar Heels dominated the first half as they outshot Winthrop 11-3. Winthrop, which played a man down for the last 60 minutes of the game following the ejection of defender Rob Bruni, went on the attack in the second half, knotting the score at 1-1 at the 52-minute mark on an unassisted goal by Darryl Gomez, his fourth of the season. Bucy put UNC back on top 13 minutes later with a straight-away header off a long pass from Noz Yamauchi. The Tar Heels scored the clinching goal just two minutes later as Chris Carrieri took a pass from Bucy and connected in the far right corner of the goal with 23 minutes left to play. The Eagles drew to within a point with only 1:18 left in the game when Dave Oldham headed in a goal from 10 yards away off the assist from Andrew Blackadder. It was Oldham's third goal this year.
