Dworsky Lifts Tar Heels Past Pack, 1-0
Sept. 15, 2007
RALEIGH, N.C. - Sophomore forward Bill Dworsky scored his third goal in the last two games to lead North Carolina to a 1-0 victory over NC State in the Atlantic Coast Conference opener for both teams Saturday at Method Road Soccer Stadium.
The Tar Heels (2-1-2, 1-0-0 ACC) improved to 10-1-3 against the Wolfpack (3-2-1, 0-1-0 ACC) since 1997, and the win was UNC's first in a conference opener since a victory over Virginia in 2004.
After the teams combined for only 12 shots over the first 72 minutes, Dworsky scored on a low cross into the box from sophomore forward Ryan Johnson for his second straight game-winning goal at the 72:12 mark. Johnson's assist was the first of his career, and Dworsky now leads the Tar Heels with seven points on three goals and an assist. He has already matched his point total from a year ago.
Freshman goalkeeper Tyler Deric, who lowered his goals against average to 0.55, recorded his second straight shutout but needed to make just one save. The Tar Heels outshot NC State 11-6 and held a 9-3 edge in the second half. Carolina had nine corners to just one for State.
Wolfpack keeper Christopher Widman had to make just one save, as the teams combined to put just three shots on goal in the match.
With Saturday's victory, the Tar Heels improved to 46-20-11 all-time against the Wolfpack, and 19th-year head coach Elmar Bolowich moved to 7-9-3 in ACC openers.
After going 2-0-1 in three matches away from home, Carolina returns to Fetzer Field Wednesday against William & Mary at 7:30 p.m. A webcast of the game will be available through ACC Select.
