WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - After scoring just twice over its first three outings, North Carolina rode the first career multi-goal game from sophomore forward Bill Dworsky to a 3-0 shutout victory over No. 16 Akron Sunday in the Wake Forest adidas Classic at Spry Stadium.

In addition to Dworsky's effort, junior midfielder Garry Lewis added his first goal and junior midfielder Joan Carvajal chipped in with two assists for the Tar Heels, who improved to 1-1-2 with their first victory of the season.

Akron dropped to 2-2-0 after being outscored 6-1 in two matches against UNC and the host Demon Deacons over the weekend.

Defensively for the Tar Heels, goalkeeper Tyler Deric went all 90 minutes and made two saves in goal to record his first career shutout. The Spring, Texas, native allowed just one goal over 200 minutes this weekend to lower his goals against average to 0.68. Akron's Evan Bush made four stops and allowed three goals.

As it has for much of the season, Carolina managed to control play Sunday, posting a 15-5 advantage on the shot chart. Dworsky put the Tar Heels on the board in the 23rd minute off a feed from Carvajal, and Lewis followed just over 12 minutes later from five yards out off Carvajal's second assist of the day.

Dworsky added his second strike under five minutes into the second half to put the match away and give Carolina a 1-0-1 record against top-20 opponents on the young season. The Huntsville, Ala., product leads the Tar Heels with five points on the year after tallying just seven points all of last season. He had scored just two career goals entering Sunday's match.

Lewis' goal was just his second as a Tar Heel and first since last year's Wake Forest adidas Classic against Central Florida.

The Tar Heels are off until Saturday when they open Atlantic Coast Conference action at NC State at 4 p.m.
