No. 1 Tar Heels Settle For Draw With Huskies

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Junior midfielder Michael Farfan tallied the equalizer in the 61st minute, and No. 1 North Carolina threatened throughout regulation and both overtime periods but could not find the go-ahead goal in a 1-1 draw with Northern Illinois Friday in the Carolina Nike Classic at Fetzer Field.

Jordan Godsey made six stops in net, and Tim King put the Huskies (0-1-1) on the board with a 21st-minute goal. Brooks Haggerty made two stops for the Tar Heels (1-0-1), as both keepers went the full 110 minutes.

With Carolina down a goal thanks to King's strike at 20:39, Farfan and the Tar Heels broke through to knot the score at one at 60:16 when the Cal State Fullerton transfer dinked a shot off the right post from the 18. Kirk Urso started the scoring chance with a corner kick into the box that deflected off an NIU defender and found Farfan just outside the left side of the box for his first goal as a Tar Heel.

Boston College Men's Soccer Beats Bryant 2-0 In Home Opener

Newton, Mass. - Freshman Kyle Bekker netted a first-half goal and classmate Kevin Mejia scored late in the second half as Boston College defeated Byrant, 2-0, in the Eagles' home opening-game before 627 fans at the Newton Campus Complex. Both goals marked the first of each player's collegiate career.

Bekker netted the game's lone first-half score in the 38th minute. After Karl Reddick assumed possession deep in his offensive zone, his feed was chipped by Bekker's right foot over a sliding goalkeeper for the score.

Mejia doubled the BC margin at 84:20. The Pasadena, Calif., resident took freshman Isaac Taylor's cross into open space, stepped around the defended and beat challenging goalkeeper Matt Miscione (eight saves) with his right foot along the ground.
