CLEMSON, SC -- Clemson defeated Gardner-Webb 3-1 in a men's intercollegiate soccer match at Clemson, SC Sunday night. With the win, 12th-ranked Clemson is now 1-1 on the year, while the Bulldogs fall to 0-1-1 this season. Clemson scored at the 13:47 mark in the match as freshman Tommy Drake scored with assists by David Newton and Greg Eckhardt. Michael Brooks gave the Tigers a 2-0 advantage in the 41st minute with assists by David Bell and Havird Usry. Logan Swaim scored a goal for Gardner-Webb in the 44th minute and was assisted on the play by Guy Mbamyamsig and Julian Morris. The Tigers scored the insurance goal at the 71:48 point in the match. Nathan Thornton scored on a 33-yard shot for his first goal of the season.
"First of all, I am very appreciative of the fan support this weekend," said Head Coach Trevor Adair. "We had a great crowd Friday night and another one tonight. I can't say enough good things about our wonderful fan support. I wish we could perform as well as our fans supported us tonight. I am disappointed in the team's mental errors. Nathan Thornton and Michael Brooks came off the bench and stepped up their level of play. We have a young team and the upper classmen need to step up their performance. Brooks played well with his back to the goal. David Newton, Paulo Bonfim, Tommy Drake did well. Drake has the makings of a good player. I'm just not happy with our mental errors. We have a long way to go." Clemson 3, Gardner-Webb 1
