Virginia Men's Soccer Tops Columbia 5-0 in Season Opener
The Virginia men's soccer team got two goals each from Yannick Reyering (Mettingen, Germany) and Chris Tierney (Wellesley, Mass.) as it downed Columbia 5-0 in its season opener Friday night at Klöckner Stadium. With the victory, the fifth-ranked Cavaliers won their season opener for the fourth consecutive year.

It didn't take long for the Cavaliers (1-0-0) to take the lead, as Reyering scored 30 seconds into the game. He picked up a loose ball in the box on a rebound off of Neil Barlow's (Langley, Va.) shot and placed it into the empty net. Virginia added to the lead in the 35th minute when Jonathan Villanueva (Grand Prairie, Texas) sent a through ball to set up Jeremy Barlow (Langley, Va.), who was fouled in the box. Reyering converted the penalty to record his third career multi-goal game. (Read More)

Rennie Picks Up Win No. 400 As Duke Opens 2007 With 6-1 Win Over Delaware
The No. 2 Duke Blue Devils kicked off the season with a bang, defeating Delaware 6-1 in front of over 3,000 fans in Koskinen Stadium. Six different Blue Devils tallied goals on the evening as Duke gained win No. 400 for head coach John Rennie, who is stepping down at the end of the season.

The offensive output from Duke was staggering, as they scored six goals for the first time since Oct. 11, 2005, when they defeated No. 11 N.C. State, 6-0. This was the Devils most dominating victory since that triumph almost two years ago.

Leading the charge was preseason All-Americas Mike Grella and Michael Videira. Each star had one goal and one assist. Senior midfielder Joe Germanese and senior forward Paul Dudley also had a score and an assist a piece in the game. Senior midfielder Tomek Charowski and grad student forward (and Vanderbilt transfer) Joshua Medcalf both found the back of the net, and sophomore defender Josh Bienenfeld had one dish to round out the point-scoring for Duke. No. 16 Tar Heels Clipped By Monmouth, 1-0
In its first season-opening loss since 1997, No. 16 North Carolina could not overcome a second half goal from Monmouth's Damon Wilson in a 1-0 defeat in the Carolina Nike Classic at Fetzer Field.

The Tar Heels (0-1-0) outshot the Hawks (1-0-0) by a 16-4 margin, including a 9-0 mark in the first half. Carolina had two first-half scores by junior forward Brian Shriver waved off due to offside calls and just missed on a number of chances in the second period.

Just under three minutes after UNC midfielder Michael Callahan nearly gave the Tar Heels the lead with a blast off the crossbar, the Hawks broke into the scoring column on their first shot on goal of the night.
