VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The University of North Carolina men's soccer team began its spring season games with a 4-0 shutout in Virginia Beach, Va., against the A-League's Hampton Roads Mariners Pro Soccer team.

The Tar Heels looked to be fitter and more goal-oriented team during the afternoon, as four different players scored. During the first of three 35-minute periods, it was Chris Carrieri who put the ball in the net in the second minute of play after Matt Crawford played a ball through the Hampton defense.

Caleb Norkus added an unassisted goal in the 30th minute when he dribbled across the box and finished with a left-footed shot in the lower corner of the goal.

Stephen Cash and C.J. Steffen each added a goal in the second period to make it 4-0 after 70 minutes.

Hampton rarely challenged the Heels' goal area. Carolina defenders Danny Jackson, Chris Leitch, Brandon Helms, and Steven Sartorio helped secure the shutout.
